Spinal Stenosis Treatment
Spinal stenosis is a medical condition that occurs when the spinal canal narrows abnormally and compresses the nerve roots and/or spinal cord. Most common in the lumbar region (the lower back), spinal stenosis can also occur in the cervical area (neck/upper back). Newport Spine & Physical Medicine’s has extensive knowledge in treating Irvine residents who suffer with spinal stenosis.
Spinal stenosis has a number of causes, which include:
- disc herniations
- bone overgrowth
- spinal injuries
- abnormal growths (such as tumors)
- thickened ligaments
The symptoms of spinal stenosis vary depending on where the narrowing occurs. If it’s in the neck, you may experience weakness, tingling and numbness in the arm, hand, leg or foot. In some cases, bowel and bladder control can also be affected. Spinal stenosis in the lower back causes cramping and pain when standing or walking for a long period of time, but these symptoms may be relieved by sitting or bending forward.
After evaluating your symptoms and diagnosing the cause of your spinal stenosis, your doctor can recommend a treatment plan. Our patients have experienced long-term pain relief for spinal stenosis with therapies such as chiropractic care, spinal decompression and physical rehab.
